For a poet who makes his trade of poetry and whose tongue is to be feared, everything he earns is unlawful, it is not lawful to listen to him, and it is not lawful to give him anything unasked, since that helps sin; but if one fears his tongue, one may give to guard one's honour, and that gift is counted as charity. The Prophet is reported to have given a poet forty dirhams and to have said to Bilal to cut off the tongue; he gave his cloak to Ka'b ibn Zuhayr when he praised him. {cite:fiqh-mawsua-kuwaitiyya-noor-v3 p.10093} {cite:fiqh-mawsua-kuwaitiyya-noor-v3 p.10094}\nWhen 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Aziz was caliph, poets came to his door; he admitted only Jarir, and told him to fear God and say only the truth.
