"en": "Holding the soul to God's obedience, away from disobedience, and through His painful decrees; in the commentary on Ibn Abbas's counsel Ibn Rajab records that contentment is a recommended excellence while patience is binding upon the believer, God having commanded it and promised a vast reward, that in patience over what one dislikes lies much good since the affliction written upon the servant, borne patiently, yields much good — Amr mawla Ghafra's route adding 'if you can work for God with contentment in certainty then do, and if not, then in patience over what you dislike lies much good'; the servant needs God's aid for performing the commands, abandoning the forbidden and bearing all decreed things in the world, at death and through the terrors of the barzakh and resurrection — none can aid that but God, and whoever truly seeks His aid is aided, as in 'strive for what benefits you, seek God's help and do not flag'; 'victory is with patience' covers both jihads, the outward enemy and the inward — the patient triumphs and the fretter is captured or slain — and Ibn al-Mubarak's saying 'whoever is patient, how little he needs to endure, and whoever frets, how little he enjoys', followed by 'relief is with affliction' and 'with hardship is ease'."

Patience helps one control feelings and tongue: the patient person owns his tongue before he speaks {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy al-fawzu-al-moubeen/ep13 00:35:00}. He urges learning patience beginning with spouses, since some complain that a wife talks too much and others that a husband says too little {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:36:30}. He describes types of spouses, noting that some wives magnify small matters {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:37:30}. He describes an easygoing husband who leaves his wife to manage the economic and social affairs, such as visits, congratulations and condolences, and jokes that she is the director of public relations and the minister of foreign affairs and of the interior {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:38:00}. He advises newlyweds who complain after two years to be patient for three or four more, until each understands the other's personality {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:38:30}. He holds that the first stage of patience is with a wife who is meticulous and loves precision, and that the husband should learn patience with her in that {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:39:00}. He jokes that precision is not his own habit, and suggests that anyone whose wife talks a great deal should try patience with her first {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:39:30}. He holds that homes and societies crack only when patience dissolves, and that once it is gone people begin to harm one another {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:41:00}. He calls for tolerance toward a curious colleague, taking in his questions rather than trying to raise him in one's own way {cite:assabile-omar-abdelkafy tafsir-al-quran-al-qareem/ep05 00:41:30}.
