The Prophet sent three thousand men under Zayd ibn Haritha, ordering that Ja'far ibn Abi Talib succeed him if he fell, then Abd Allah ibn Rawaha — the first large engagement between the Muslims and Byzantine power with its Arab allies the Ghassanids, Lakhm and Judham. The three commanders were martyred in the named order; Thabit ibn Arqam raised the flag, and the troops called on Khalid ibn al-Walid, who led a disciplined withdrawal back to Medina. Some Medinans called them 'the runners-away'; the Prophet answered they were 'the returners-to-attack'.
