On the news a great mourning struck Medina: Umar first denied it, then Abu Bakr delivered the famous address 'Whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died' and recited the verse on the death of messengers, and the crowds settled. The Saqifa of Banu Sa'ida met the same day ending in the pledge to Abu Bakr; the Prophet was washed, shrouded, prayed over and buried in Aisha's chamber where he died, his tomb later lying inside the expanded mosque. The sources differ on details of his illness, age and date within the sira's bounds, and the event marks Islam's passage from the era of revelation to the era of the caliphs."
