The sira books record his re-digging of the buried well of Zamzam, his famous vow concerning his sons when they were few, and his raising of the Prophet after his mother Amina's death until the boy was about eight, after which Abu Talib took him in. His most famous story is the affair of the Elephant around 570 CE: Abraha al-Ashram's army came to demolish the Kaaba; when Abraha seized his camels he gave the famous answer 'As for the camels, they have an owner who will protect them — but the House has a Lord who will protect it', and God repelled the Elephant with flocks of birds as the sura and the sira record. His judgment was bound to him and he led Quraysh, founding the ilaf order around the House and the pilgrims. He died when the Prophet was about eight, so the Prophet spent his first years in his care, and he remains the tradition's model of Arab wisdom tied to God's House."
