At fifteen he joined his father in Beirut to work at the post office, then at the Beirut customs house, but writing drew him to journalism and he contributed to al-Taqaddum. He moved to Egypt in 1876, and in Alexandria he worked with Salim al-Naqqash, newly arrived like him, on writing and staging plays; in Cairo he met Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, was deeply influenced by him, and founded the newspaper Misr for him in 1877. He held a senior secretarial post under the Urabi movement, left Egypt in 1881 as it disintegrated, and in Paris — where he had gone in 1880 — he published the Arabic journal Misr al-Qahira with the help of Abdallah Marrash, mixing with French men of letters including Victor Hugo, and was known there as the \"prodigy of the East\". Recalled to Cairo by Sharif Pasha, he headed the bureau of translation and composition and served as secretary of the Chamber of Deputies, before withdrawing from the revolutionary camp and writing against the Urabis in al-I'tidal. His most quoted verses run: \"To kill one man in a forest is a crime unforgivable; to kill a safe people is a matter open to debate\" — four lines only are quoted here, as the museum's rule requires. The category systems do more: the Arabic article files him under \"Christian poets\" and \"Syrian Christians\", and the Urdu stub under \"Syrian Christians\" and \"Christian poets\", but filings are not attestations, and Wikidata's one structured value, the Armenian Catholic Church, is a single value of the kind the museum never counts alone. That is the first of the museum's recurring configurations in this block — origins and filings only — and it stands unknown, as it did for Salama Moussa and Jurji Zaydan. From the other direction, Khayati's study calls him a \"free-thinking disciple\" of al-Afghani: one scholar's description of his thought, which does not by itself meet the museum's bar for recording unbelief either.
