Ibn al-Imad reports that he was a Byzantine boy taken young, together with his brother, from the lands of Rum near the fortress of Dhu al-Kala, and that he learned the script in Palestine. When al-Ikhshid died and Kafur took over the service of his son, Fatik disliked remaining in Egypt so as not to ride in Kafur's service.
