The QID was grounded through the articles' page properties: the English title 'Ma Jian' is a disambiguation page whose item, Q1882217, is a different entity, and the translator's item Q2474573 is the one carried by the English 'Muhammad Ma Jian' and the Chinese 馬堅. Existence was checked both ways before building: no record under data/person/ carries his name in Latin, Arabic or Chinese fragments or the QID Q2474573, and no Arabic label is shared with any existing record, so no homonym entry is required. The student_of edge to person/ha-decheng, built in this same run, rests on Ha Decheng's Chinese article, which calls Ma Jian his student — Ha went to Shadian in 1941 to help 'his student Ma Jian' translate the whole Qur'an — and on Ma Jian's Chinese article, which has him enter the Shanghai Islamic Normal School that Ha founded. No student_of edge to Hu Songshan is written, though the English and Chinese articles both attest his study under Hu at Guyuan, because Hu Songshan has no museum record. The lived_in edge to place/cairo is scoped to his study residence of 1931–1939 at al-Azhar, and the traveled_to edge to place/mecca to the hajj delegation of early 1939 attested in the English article.",

After two years directing his home village's primary school — work he said he did not enjoy, holding that what the Hui needed, and China needed, was education — he travelled the length of war-torn China in 1928 to study Persian under the ahong Hu Songshan at Guyuan in Ningxia, spending three years there and translating the Wiqaya and Saadi's Gulistan into Chinese. The first eight volumes of his annotated Qur'an translation appeared from 1949; he was a founding figure of the Islamic Association of China, served in the CPPCC and the National People's Congress, interpreted for Zhou Enlai at Bandung, and kept his chair through the Cultural Revolution, which killed members of his family and left him working on the translation by dictation through a magnifying glass.
