     "markdown": "Ibn Ishaq relates from him that he heard the people saying \"Abu al-Hakam cannot be reached\", so he made that his affair; he charged him and struck a blow that sent his foot flying off with half his shin. Then his son [[person/ikrima-ibn-abi-jahl|Ikrama]] struck him on the shoulder and threw his hand off — it hung by a strip of his side's skin, and he fought that day dragging it until he stretched it free and cast it aside {cite:mubarakpuri-raheeq p. 221}. Then his brother [[person/muawwidh-ibn-afra|Mu'awwidh ibn Afra']] passed by Abu Jahl while he lay hamstrung and finished him; afterwards [[person/abdullah-ibn-masud|Abdullah ibn Mas'ud]] took off his head {cite:mubarakpuri-raheeq pp. 220-221}.\n\nWhen the Prophet asked the two youths which of them had killed him and each said \"I\", he looked at the two swords and said: \"you both killed him\", and awarded Abu Jahl's spoil to Mu'adh since Mu'awwidh was killed in the same battle {cite:sahih-al-bukhari} {cite:mishkat-al-masabih}.
