The ritual marker of the split was the order's prayer Jawharat al-Kamal, recited twelve times by the Umaris — the \"twelve grains\" — and eleven times by the Hamallists — the \"eleven grains\" — after the number of beads on the rosary. Sylla gained great influence among the Gattaga Hamallists, in part through a reputation for reading thoughts and knowing strangers' identities, ages and circumstances on sight. He preached the equality of man and woman and the worthlessness of adornment, had women's clothing of semi-transparent tulle burned and gold necklaces sold, organised public confessions for extramarital relations, and spoke publicly for limiting the bride-price, which had inflated sharply. Women were the majority of his following — a French survey of March 1930 counted 350 followers, 225 of them women — and former slaves were strongly represented. {cite:wikipedia-yacouba-sylla-de}"

There the non-Hamallist Tijanis accused him of holding orgies because he admitted women to dhikr ceremonies, and of spreading seditious songs and preaching the independence of the child within the family and of the individual within society. On 18 October 1929 a court at Nioro sentenced him to two months' prison and two years' exile for disturbing public order; after the prison term he was transferred in mid-December to an internment camp at Koutiala with his brother Fodié. The fighting at Kaédi continued without them: on 15 February 1930 numerous followers gathered to protest the French authorities' partisanship, and the Gardes de Cercle fired on the crowd, killing more than thirty of Sylla's followers. Held responsible, Sylla was exiled on 27 February 1930 by the governor of French Sudan for eight years to Sassandra in Côte d'Ivoire. With their help he acquired in 1932–33 a first plot of 135 hectares at Kokolopozo (Dioulabougou), 135 kilometres from Gagnoa, and set his followers to growing coffee, cocoa and palm oil; in 1936 he bought a second cocoa and banana plantation twenty kilometres north of Sassandra. When his sentence was lifted on 28 February 1938 he bought, in 1939, a third plot at Gagnoa, planted lemons, coffee and cocoa, built a house and made the town his main residence, opening a fourth plantation at Daloa. By 1939 he was wealthy enough to give his shaykh Hamahoullah a Ford Mercury. {cite:wikipedia-yacouba-sylla-de}"

Between 1946 and 1958 he financed the electrification of Gagnoa. {cite:wikipedia-yacouba-sylla-de} The French article details the cinema network: the first hall was built at Gagnoa in the early 1950s in the Dioulabougou quarter near his residence; halls followed at Sinfra, Divo and Oumé by 1954, at Soubré and Daloa by 1957, and at Adzopé in 1965, each seating several hundred, with community members running projection, maintenance, ticketing and security. Muslims held him in high regard for his past as a religious leader who had stood in conflict with the colonial power, while the administration came to value his de-escalating role. After independence in 1960 his followers supported Houphouët-Boigny's regime and received its patronage; to the non-Muslim Bété, who rejected the RDA, he remained a foreign intruder, and in 1955 a group of young Bété men attacked his Dioulabougou plantation complex to destroy it.
