It names the battle of Uhud in Shawwal 3 AH (March 625 CE): the Prophet marched out with seven hundred men to meet the army of Quraysh under Abu Sufyan coming to avenge Badr; the battle ended in the Muslims' defeat after the fifty archers left their post on the Archers' Hill seeking spoil, Khalid ibn al-Walid wheeled his cavalry, the ranks broke and some seventy companions were martyred — most famously Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, master of martyrs — and the Prophet was wounded in the face and lost a tooth. The martyrs were buried where they fell in the cemetery at the mountain's foot, still visited today; and Muslim records the Prophet saying 'Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it'. Historians read in the mountain and its battle the model of military obedience and the price of abandoning orders, and the hadith gives the virtue of visiting it."
