many names, she says, show the honour of the one named. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:02:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:02:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep05 00:03:00} In her view he was chosen unlettered and orphaned so that no one could say he took his knowledge from an earlier culture or civilisation, and without any teacher he would climb to [[place/ghar-hira|the cave of Hira]] to worship, reflect and look towards the Ka'ba. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:04:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:04:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep04 00:06:30}\n\n**Episode 6: Amina and Thuwayba.** Before speaking of why people love the Prophet she begins with his mothers: [[person/amina-bint-wahb|Amina bint Wahb]], her light pregnancy after her husband's death, her visions and the light she saw on the day of his birth, and then [[person/thuwayba|Thuwayba]], who nursed him. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep06 00:00:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep06 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep06 00:03:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep06 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep06 00:08:00}\n\n**Episode 7: Halima, Baraka and Fatima bint Asad.** She tells the story of [[person/halima-al-sadiyya|Halima al-Sa'diyya]], who took the orphan and saw blessing come with him, then Amina's journey to Medina and her death at al-Abwa', the care of [[person/umm-ayman|Baraka (Umm Ayman)]] for him on the road, and [[person/fatima-bint-asad|Fatima bint Asad]] in the house of Abu Talib. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:07:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:08:30} She ends by saying she wishes she could have been one of his mothers. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:09:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep07 00:09:30}\n\n**Episode 8: truthfulness.** His Companions loved him, she says, for his truthfulness and trustworthiness, the clarity of his life and his commitment to what he preached, and she cites the witness of his opponents, among them Abu Jahl's saying that they did not call him a liar but denied what he had brought, and the call from [[event/safa-proclamation|al-Safa]]. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:03:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:03:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:04:00} For her the strongest proof of his truthfulness is the love and trust of his Companions, some of whom had known him for ten years before the mission, merchants who travelled to Syria and Yemen and people skilled in reading faces who could tell an honest man from a liar. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:05:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep08 00:07:00}\n\n**Episode 9 (repeated as episode 10): certainty that does not bend.** From the start, she says, he faced his people with the heart of the message, and his followers did the same: Abu Bakr; the Arabs dated by events such as the bursting of the dam of al-Arim and the Year of the Elephant, and the calendar was dated from the hijra rather than from the mission because the hijra began the abode of faith. She sees in Medina the three elements of a state: a people of Emigrants, Ansar and some Jews, a territory, and an authority, the Prophet. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:02:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:02:30} One should say that he 'emigrated' (hajara) and not that he 'abandoned' (hajara as desertion) Mecca, she says, because he did not leave it of his own will but was driven to migrate. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:02:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:03:00} She then tells of [[journey/first-migration-to-abyssinia|the migration to Abyssinia]], Abu Bakr's joy at accompanying him on the hijra to Medina, the money he took and Asma's device with her blind grandfather Abu Quhafa. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:03:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:05:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:10:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep14 00:10:30}\n\n**Episode 15: the cave, and Ali.** She tells what Abu Bakr did in [[place/ghar-thawr|the cave of Thawr]], Ali's night in the Prophet's bed on the night of [[event/hijra-night-escape|the escape]], and the banner of [[event/battle-of-khaybar|Khaybar]]; she recalls Ali's conversion as a boy, the report of the merchant who saw the Prophet, Khadija and Ali at prayer, and Ali's knowledge of his future killer, Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:00:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:09:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:09:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep15 00:12:00}\n\n**Episode 16: ethics in worship.** She does not like, she says, dividing the message into creed, worship, dealings and ethics, because ethics runs through all of it from tawhid itself: tawhid is justice and associating partners with God is wrongdoing. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:02:00} She finds an ethical core in every act of worship: prayer restrains from indecency and wrong, and is a support the weary turn to, as the Prophet would ask Bilal to give them rest by it; fasting forms the will and aims at God-consciousness, and only God sees the one who fasts; zakat purifies wealth, refines the soul and brings blessing; and the hajj is a 'rehearsal' of life and of the passage to the hereafter. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:04:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:05:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:07:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:08:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:08:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep16 00:10:00}\n\n**Episode 17: ethics in economy and politics.** The tragedy of the age, in her view, is that economic dealings have been emptied of ethics, and she criticises what she calls 'instrumental reason', which invents a tool without asking what it will be used for. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:02:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:03:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:03:30} She recalls the prohibition of hoarding and of cheating, the duty of a merchant to show the defect in his goods, and the hadith that on the Day of Judgement a servant will be asked about his life, his youth and his wealth. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep17 00:07:00} Politics in Islam, she says, is ethical and not 'Machiavellian': no end justifies the means; and that he told a man who trembled before him that he was no king but the son of a woman who ate dried meat in Mecca. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep19 00:03:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep19 00:05:00} She describes his courtesy in a gathering, in a handshake and in listening, his service to his household and his mending of his own sandals. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep19 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep19 00:06:00}\n\n**Episode 20: generosity.** Wealth, she says, belongs to God and people are trustees of it, and charity does not lessen wealth but adds blessing to it. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:03:00} She recalls that the Prophet's house might hold nothing but dates and water, as Aisha said, and that Abdullah ibn Umar would not eat without an orphan or a poor man beside him. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:04:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:05:00} She tells the story of [[person/said-ibn-amir-al-jumahi|Sa'id ibn Amir]] in Syria, the detachment of Abu al-Darda', who was a merchant, and that the Prophet was most generous in Ramadan. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:08:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:09:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep20 00:09:30}\n\n**Episode 21: education.** The tragedy of the age, she says, is that people learn a great deal without being formed, while the Prophet defined his mission as being sent as a teacher; purification comes before instruction, since one who has not been formed cannot receive knowledge. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:02:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:02:30} She measures the perfection of an educator by three things: his power to raise a person from a lower state to a higher one, the breadth of the circle of those he changed, and the constancy of his method and its fitness for the generations. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:07:00} She says that some orientalists counted him the greatest reformer in history, without naming any of them. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep21 00:08:00} (needs_source: the speaker names neither these orientalists nor their books.)\n\n**Episode 22: 'the school of Muhammad'.** She gives two examples of people changed by the Prophet's formation. The first is Umar ibn al-Khattab, who had been harsh and became the just Commander of the Faithful who called his governors to account for their wealth before and after their appointment, asked Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman whether he was among the hypocrites, accepted that people might set him straight with their swords and gave way to a woman's objection. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:03:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:04:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:08:00} The second is [[person/abdullah-ibn-masud|Abdullah ibn Mas'ud]], the thin hired labourer whose legs the Prophet said weighed more with God than Uhud, who became the dean of the Qur'an's reciters, took seventy suras from the Prophet and founded a school of fiqh from which Abu Hanifa drew. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:09:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:10:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep22 00:10:30}\n\n**Episode 23 (repeated as episode 24): women.** Islam, she says, honoured woman as mother, daughter, wife, sister and widow. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:00:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:08:00} She recalls the counsel on the mother and on parents; for the daughter, the hadith on treating children equally in gifts and even in kisses; for the wife, that marriage is a contract of consent concluded only with her agreement, that she may set conditions in the contract that do not contradict its basis, such as that he not take her travelling or not marry another wife, and that she has the right of khul'. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:02:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:07:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:08:00} She relates the hadith of the woman who hurries to the gate of Paradise with the Prophet because she devoted herself to her orphans, and says that in his time no widow or divorced woman remained unmarried. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:08:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:09:00} She ends with the Muslim woman who lost her father, brother and husband and, seeing the Prophet safe, said that every misfortune after him was light. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:10:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep23 00:10:30} (See [[concept/huquq-al-walidayn|the rights of parents]].)\n\n**Episode 25: the fruits of the message: tawhid and the hereafter.** The first fruit, she says, was tawhid in a world that worshipped idols, trees, the sun and the moon; the second was reminding people of the Last Day, so that they work for the hereafter without forgetting this world. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:04:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:05:00} She relates the hadith of the one who makes the hereafter his concern, the generosity of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf with his caravans, Abu al-Darda' sleeping on a hide, and Umar's counsel to call oneself to account. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:06:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:06:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:09:00} She quotes Ali telling the world to go and deceive someone else. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep25 00:13:30}\n\n**Episode 26: personal responsibility, equality and clear-sighted obedience.** The message, she says, brought the principle that every soul is pledged for what it has earned, so that no one bears another's burden, and a single humanity in a world of ranks; she mentions the castes of India and the Persian kings' claim to divine blood. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:00:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:01:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:01:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:02:00} She recalls that the first Companions joined the nobles of Quraysh with Suhayb the Roman, Salman the Persian and Bilal the Abyssinian, Abu Bakr's address on taking office, and Abu Dharr dressing as his servant dressed. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:03:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:04:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:05:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:05:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:06:00} She sees in the prohibition of wine an example of 'clear-sighted obedience': wine was the life of the people and their greatest trade, and when the prohibition came they poured it out until it ran in the streets of Medina. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:07:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:08:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:08:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:09:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:09:30} Among the institutions of the Prophet's time she names the leaders (nuqaba'), the Seventy and the waqf. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:10:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep26 00:11:00}\n\n**Episode 27: the death.** She tells of [[event/death-of-the-prophet|the Prophet's illness and death]] and the grief of his Companions, and closes with a call for love of the Prophet to mean reviving his Sunna and his way, not only praise poems and birthday celebrations; for people to love one another and stop the bloodshed; and to spend on education and on scientific and technical excellence because they are 'the language of the age'. {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:02:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:04:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:08:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:08:30} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:09:00} {cite:assabile-abla-al-kahlawi fi-hub-al-mustapha/ep27 00:10:00}"
